Coopah Recommends: Our RUNNING KIT ESSENTIALS.

In this series of ‘Coopah Recommends’ blogs, we are going to share our top recommendations for the most common questions we get asked by our community of runners, and this blog is all about Our Running Kit Essentials.

We totally get that when you start running, and especially if are training for your first marathon it can be really overwhelming to know what kit you need, so we hope to make life a little easier for you and share our top kit recommendations to help make your training journey that bit easier!

Trainers

Now this is probably one of the most important items in your running wardrobe - your trainers! You will be covering lots of miles during your training so its important that you get the right shoes for you. If you are not sure where to start, we would suggest heading to your local running shop and getting a gait analysis and you will then be advised what trainers would suit you best; it may be that you need a bit of extra support + cushioning, or a more stable trainer - but by making sure you get the right shoes it will ensure your training gets off to the right start!

Tshirts, Shorts + Everything in between.

Don’t panic, we aren’t going to tell you that you need to invest in a whole new wardrobe, but here are some things to consider when choosing your running attire

  • Try to avoid wearing cotton tops - these tend to feel heavier and do not absorb water very well (which isn’t much fun if you get caught in the rain!)

  • Opt for moisture wicking fabrics instead as these will absorb rain + sweat, and provide better ventilation too

  • Comfort is key - make sure that your clothes fit well as if something is too tight or too baggy, this can cause chafing (which is not what you want!)

  • Invest in a lightweight, water resistant running jacket to help protect you against the elements during your winter training.

Safety First.

As we are heading into winter, the chances are a lot of your training runs will be done in the dark, so it’s important that you have the right equipment to help keep you safe on the roads.

  • Head torch

  • Chest strap with light

  • Light + Reflective clothing

You can find lots of different options + the one that is right for you here.

Be Prepared.

Training over the winter months can also mean training in unpredictable weather. It’s important to make sure you dress appropriately, but also remember that as you run you will warm up so try wearing lightweight layers that you can remove during your run if needed. You may also want to make sure you have the following;

  • Hat - doesn’t need to be anything fancy, a bobble hat will do!

  • Gloves - similar to your kit, try to pick up a pair of running specific gloves that are made from moisture wicking fabrics so that your hands don’t get too hot and sweaty.

  • Socks - a good pair of thick running socks (remember that moisture wicking fabric!) will really help to keep your feet warm, even if they get wet!

  • Base Layer - again make sure you pick one that is made from moisture wicking fabric as this will keep sweat + water away from your skin
